Emission Factor

This guide explains how to select and approve emission factors for your organization using the ESG Management System.

What is an Emission Factor?

An emission factor is a value that quantifies the greenhouse gas emissions produced per unit of activity (e.g., kg CO₂e per kWh of electricity). Selecting the correct emission factors is essential for accurate GHG reporting.

Each emission factor record includes:

  • Factor Name: Descriptive name (e.g., "Vietnam Grid Electricity 2023")
  • Factor Type: Energy, Transportation, or Other
  • Source Type: Electricity, Gas, Coal, Oil, Biomass, etc.
  • Emission Factor Value: The numeric value (e.g., 0.65)
  • Unit: e.g., kg CO₂e/kWh
  • Scope: Scope 1, 2, or 3
  • Calculation Method: Energy-Based, Distance-Based, etc.
  • Country/Region: Geographic applicability
  • Is Default: Indicates if this is the default factor

Best Practices

  • Always use the most recent and region-specific emission factors when available
  • Default factors are provided for convenience, but custom or local factors may be more accurate
  • Regularly review and update your organization's emission factors to ensure compliance and accuracy
